Guerilla Ceilidh!!!
No, not DANCING MONKEYS, just an unplanned and quasi-legal public concert.

Wouldn't it just figure, the night we get an assload of musicians showing up, due to our tireless PIMPING of the VENUE, the venue shut down. St. Steven's Green in Los Altos is no more. So we set up our shiny new PA in the public sqare in downtown Los Altos and played a ceilidh anyway. We had a whistle, banjo, bass, guitar and vocals, and a MARIMBA player, jsut to keep things interesting. Many random passersby stopped to listen and watch the dancers; a few joined in. And in the 2.5 hours that we were there, nary a single cop showed up.

Lots of fun.

But our pub is closed, which sucks.

Fearless Leader Ammy is plugging away at finding us a new venue, but we may kick out a few more stealth gigs like this before the summer is through. Fun fun fun!

Ak! I was hoping to finally make it next week. :(
Perhaps a keg of beer might entice you guys to play a house party in SF some time?

1 bottle of cider would get you 1/4th the band. =) I'm sure the rest would be able for the beer.

How about an Autumn Equinox party on Saturday September 18th?

It was fun. In addition to random passersby, we had cars that were driving down main street stop and stare at us. Another car would drive up behind them and honk at the car of people staring at us.

We were also being ogled by the janitors who were cleaning the building across the street, and a couple of late-home shopkeepers on main st.

Didn't notice them. But that is the problem when your eyes are attached to your head and your head is attached to a whistle and you try to keep the whistle within a small area in front of the microphone.

Sorry the venue is gone, but cool that you were able to do the outdoor thing. Someone might consider contacting the 'city' of Los Altos and see how painful the permit process is.

Word. I suspect if you get some good PR going first--isn't their local paper called the Town Crier or something?--you might be able to pull it off.

Yes, this is exactly what I was going to propose. If you're not disturbing a residential area, I'd think that any downtown would be happy to have an activity that might draw people down to eat and otherwise spend money. Los Altos really rolls up the sidewalks at 6pm, and maybe this could change that.

Something has to happen, I barely got started learning how to dance!

*seconds [info]lemurling and [info]aoibhill*

I had finally worked my schedule out to make it every other Tuesday -- wah! :(

So, I hope Los Altos makes the permitting process easy and that y'all decide to do that. It would be *very* *cool.* (And relieve me of feeling obliged to buy a drink, which means more money in the hat!)

Well, I dropped Fearless Leaderess a note--I think if we help her plan, we could talk Los Altos into this, at least on a temporary basis.

I guess the first step is talking to the LAPD? Or the city chamber of commerce?

Parks and rec, probably. As I said over in [info]wintergr3y's blog, the LA municipal code exempts certain outdoor events from the noise ordinance's terms--and it SPECIFICALLY mentions dances. So, I'd call the City about the permit process, find out what you need to get that in motion, and be aware that there is a City Council meeting next Tuesday in case you need to hit that to get things moving.

Warning that there is a possibility they will be pissy about things like insurance.

These folks might be helpful -- it's an organization that tries to promote foot traffic for the merchants in Los Altos, among other things. The Parks, Arts, and Recreation folks might also be helpful.

Good luck! (And don't forget the hat*g*)
